Without giving away any plotlines, the first book finished with a cliffhanger, and it has been interesting to see where the author has taken that thread and woven it further into the various plotlines. This is a rich, multi-layered story, with enough depth to keep the reader interested but not too much to cause confusion. There are an abundance of twists and turns, and a quest worthy of some of the classics of fantasy fiction. The references to violence, torture and sex are handled sensitively and are essential to plot and character development, but do make the book more suitable for readers aged 15 and older. (4 stars)"
